Yoga: Grab your sunscreen, head over to the beach and strike these poses

Flamingo striking yoga pose Who could ever forget Madonna’s 1990-chart topper, Vogue? Not only was the song itself very enjoyable but the video caused the song to soar even further up the charts. Filmed in black-and-white, the video recalls the look of 1930s Hollywood films with the use of artwork by the several distinguished artists. The video features the dancers and back-up vocalists for Madonna's then-upcoming Blond Ambition Tour

A live performance of "Vogue" at the 1990 MTV Video Music Awards also proved popular. It featured Madonna and her dancers dressed in an 18th-century French theme, with Madonna bearing great resemblance to the great Marie Antoinette. No stranger to stirring up a bit of controversy, Madonna’s performance was considered risque.

Fitness: Camp is Back but With a Twist

Camp sillyhaha When you were a youngster, did you go to summer camp?  Did you go to more of a day camp or sleep-away camp? I attended sleep-away camp for the first time at about the age of 10. I was so excited to pack my duffel bag with summer clothes, pajamas, bathing suit, towels, and of course bug repellant.

I went away for two full weeks and enjoyed (almost) every minute of it. I was previously unfamiliar with snakes, so I was terrified upon discovering them in the lake that all of the campers enjoyed swimming in. I had never encountered a cricket before my sleep-away camp stay either. I discovered one in my cubbyhole on the day I was packing to return home.

Which Exercises Deliver Big Results In A Small Amount of Time?

PilatesfemaleWe all know that regular exercise significantly improves health, reduces fatigue, and keeps you looking and feeling great. But, who really feels like working out on a regular basis? Perhaps the reason we slack off on the exercise programs after just two weeks into the New Year, the beginning of summer or right after summer is because we’re simply not interested in the workout. Based on the areas of your body you want to work on and the amount of time you have to spend in the gym (or at home) every day, you can find a workout that you won’t dread when you think about it.

Heat Up Your Fall & Winter With Hot Yoga

HotyogasignLooking for a new and interesting exercise experience? How about a way to stay warm and get some exercise this fall and winter?  Well I have something for you today.  As you well know, yoga has been around for thousands of years, but a new branch of the ancient Indian discipline is emerging–hot yoga. I know what you’re thinking: “Yoga in a sauna?” Not quite, but it is practiced in a room that is heated to 92 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit.  Is that warm enough for you?  (I first heard of hot yoga several years ago through a male co-worker.  He absolutely loved it!)

When Do We Go Beyond Activity to Exercise?

"Eating alone is not enough for health. There must be exercise . . . If there is any deficiency in food or exercise, the body will fall sick." Hippocrates--500 BC

While some things change, many things remain the same. I was so inspired by the wisdom of Hippocrates (revealed so many years ago) that his quote is the foundation for my discussion today.

We teach our children not to use four letter words.  A three-letter word is now a big part of our daily lives and it is not good for us either.  That word is sit.  We do it everyday, everywhere-- in trains,Comfychair planes, buses and automobiles.  We sit whether at school or at work. We continue to sit when we eat, read, watch TV, play video games, surf the Net or chat on the phone.

Yet sitting for extended periods when you are well is counterproductive to good health.  Our joints and lower back stiffen, circulation is diminished and metabolic waste slowly pools up, causing us to experience fatigue and chronic pain.

Circuit Training: The Best Workout for Today's Busy Lifestyle

Everyone knows the value of exercise and other physical activities to one's health. Unfortunately, many modern day individuals are preoccupied with the ever-increasing demands of work, family, and other important matters that they have no time to include exercise in their schedules. Countless individuals are seeking ways to improve their physique, develop their muscles, and eliminate stress without consuming too much time.

A great way to improve one's health and physique is by doing a workout program called “circuit training.” This kind of training program involves moving from one strength training routine to another, in a specified amount of time, with the goal of working the major muscle groups in the upper body, lower body, and core. Individuals who want to try this program should remember that no two consecutive exercises should target the same muscle group. During circuit training, individuals usually perform exercises in about 20 to 30 seconds with a 30 second recovery between each exercise. Three to five sets of exercises are done with a three minute recovery between each set.

Circuit training may improve strength, muscle endurance, and metabolism because of constant movement. In addition to these health benefits, if circuit exercises are done at speed, some benefits of aerobic exercises can be achieved as well. However, this type of program alone may not burn enough calories to promote significant weight-loss.
